Volunteer Opportunities

Coach & Assistant Coach

The Upward basketball coach and assistant coach are responsible for developing athletes' skills, promoting teamwork, and instilling values aligned with Christian principles. This role emphasizes not only athletic excellence but also personal growth, discipline, and a commitment to faith.

  • Training and Development: Plan and conduct practice sessions, focusing on skill development, strategy, and physical conditioning.

  • Team Leadership: Foster a positive team culture, encouraging sportsmanship, teamwork, and mutual respect among players.

  • Spiritual Guidance: Integrate Christian teachings and values into coaching practices, leading team devotions, prayer, and discussions on faith.

  • Game Strategy: Analyze opponents and develop game plans to enhance team performance in competitions.

  • Mentorship: Serve as a role model and mentor, supporting athletes in their personal and spiritual growth.

  • Communication: Maintain open lines of communication with players, parents, and school administration regarding team progress and individual development.

  • Community Engagement: Encourage involvement in community service and outreach programs, promoting a sense of service and leadership.

Set-Up/Clean Up Crew

The Set Up and Clean Up Crew Member is responsible for preparing event spaces before events and ensuring that all areas are cleaned and organized after events. This role is essential for creating a welcoming environment and maintaining facility standards.

  • Event Setup:

    • Arrange furniture, equipment, and decorations.

    • Set up audio-visual equipment, lighting, and other technical requirements.

    • Ensure all necessary supplies (tables, chairs, linens, etc.) are ready and in good condition.

  • Cleanup After Events:

    • Remove furniture, decorations, and equipment promptly after events.

    • Clean floors, surfaces, and restrooms, ensuring all areas are tidy and sanitized.

    • Dispose of trash and recyclables in accordance with facility policies.

  • Inventory Management:

    • Help track inventory of supplies and report any shortages or damages.

    • Ensure all equipment is returned to its designated storage area after use.​

Concession Stand -

Front of House

The Concession Stand Front of House Staff member is responsible for providing excellent customer service while serving food and beverages at events. This role involves managing the front counter operations, ensuring a clean and organized environment, and creating a welcoming atmosphere for guests.

  • Customer Service: Greet customers warmly, take orders, and provide information about menu items. Ensure a positive experience for all guests.

  • Food and Beverage Preparation: Prepare and serve food and drinks according to established health and safety guidelines. Ensure that all items are fresh and presented well.

  • Cash Handling: Process transactions accurately, handle cash and credit card payments, and provide change as needed. Maintain a balanced cash drawer.

  • Inventory Management: Monitor inventory levels, assist with restocking supplies, and report any shortages or issues to the supervisor.

  • Cleanliness and Organization: Maintain a clean and organized concession area, including regular cleaning of counters, equipment, and dining areas. Follow all health and safety regulations.

  • Team Collaboration: Work effectively with other staff members to ensure efficient operations during busy events.

  • Problem-Solving: Address customer concerns or complaints promptly and professionally, ensuring a satisfactory resolution.

Concession Stand -

Kitchen Crew

The Concession Stand Kitchen Staff member is responsible for preparing, cooking, and assembling food items for sale at events. This role focuses on food safety, quality, and efficient kitchen operations to ensure that all concession offerings meet customer expectations.

  • Food Preparation: Prepare ingredients and menu items according to standardized recipes and portion sizes, ensuring quality and consistency.

  • Cooking and Assembly: Cook food items (e.g., fries, hot dogs, nachos) and assemble orders quickly and accurately to meet customer demand.

  • Food Safety Compliance: Follow all health and safety regulations, including proper food handling, cooking temperatures, and sanitation practices to ensure food safety.

  • Inventory Management: Assist in monitoring inventory levels of food and supplies, and report any shortages or issues to the supervisor.

  • Equipment Maintenance: Operate kitchen equipment safely and efficiently, performing routine cleaning and maintenance as needed.

  • Team Collaboration: Work closely with front-of-house staff to ensure timely and efficient service, especially during peak times.

  • Cleaning Duties: Maintain cleanliness in the kitchen area, including washing dishes, cleaning surfaces, and disposing of waste properly.

Assessment Stations

(for Evaluation Sessions Only)

The Upward Assessment is responsible for conducting evaluations of basketball players to assess their skills, performance, and potential for development. This role involves executing assessment protocols and providing feedback to players, coaches, and stakeholders.​

  • Conduct Assessments: Organize and facilitate player assessments during tryouts, camps, and training sessions.

  • Data Analysis: Collect and analyze performance data to identify strengths, weaknesses, and areas for improvement for individual players and teams.

  • Player Education: Educate players on assessment processes and the importance of skill development and self-improvement.

Game Day Announcer

The Basketball Game Day Announcer is responsible for creating an engaging and energetic atmosphere during games by providing live commentary, announcing player introductions, and sharing game statistics and updates. This role plays a key part in enhancing the spectator experience and supporting the team.

  • Game Commentary: Provide play-by-play commentary during games, highlighting key plays, player performances, and important moments.

  • Player Announcements: Announce starting lineups, substitutions, and any special recognitions (e.g., birthdays, milestones).

  • Game Information: Share updates on scores, fouls, timeouts, and other relevant statistics to keep fans informed.

  • Crowd Engagement: Interact with the audience to build excitement and encourage participation in game-day promotions and activities.

  • Technical Setup: Coordinate with sound and video technicians to ensure the microphone and audio equipment are functioning properly.

  • Pre-Game Preparation: Participate in pre-game meetings with coaches and staff to gather information on players, strategies, and any special announcements.

  • Post-Game Wrap-Up: Provide a summary of the game’s highlights, key performances, and next game information to wrap up the event.

Game Day Scoreboard Operator

The Basketball Scorekeeper is responsible for accurately recording and maintaining the official score of games, tracking player statistics, and ensuring that all relevant information is communicated effectively to coaches, officials, and fans. This role is essential for the integrity of the game and the experience of everyone involved.

  • Score Management: Accurately keep the official score of the game, including points scored by each team and individual players.

  • Statistical Tracking: Record key statistics, such as rebounds, assists, fouls, and turnovers, for both teams and individual players.

  • Timekeeping: Monitor the game clock, shot clock, and timeouts, ensuring that all timing rules are followed.

  • Communication: Relay important information to referees, coaches, and announcers, including fouls and substitutions.

  • Problem Solving: Address any discrepancies in the score or statistics promptly and effectively during the game.

The Upward Store Salesman

The Upward Store Salesperson is responsible for engaging with customers to understand their needs and facilitate the sale of instore products or custom products.  This role involves managing the entire sales process, from initial consultation to order fulfillment, while providing exceptional customer service.

  • Customer Engagement: Greet customers warmly, take orders, and provide information about available items. Ensure a positive experience for all guests.

  • Product Knowledge: Maintain comprehensive knowledge of products and services, including customization options, to effectively guide customers in their selections.

  • Order Processing: Process custom orders accurately, ensuring all specifications are captured and communicated to production teams.

  • Record Keeping: Maintain accurate records of customer interactions, orders, and feedback in the sales system.
